The duration of the patent is a maximum of 20 years counted from the date of filing of the invention at the patent office.

A prerequisite for maintaining a patent is the payment of periodic fees required in due time. The patent office does not recall the expiry of the protection periods. The Patent may be revoked or terminated. After the patent expires, the invention becomes part of the public domain.
